Welcome to Year Five

Miss Colwill,  Mrs Battersby(LSA), Mrs Hann (LSA), Mrs Venables and Mrs Burgess

Hello and welcome to Year Five!

We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year!

If you cannot find the information you need on the website, please feel free to come and see us at any time!

Each morning we have Literacy, maths and a SPAG session. We also have Core Carousel during which each child will get the opportunity to read to the teacher as part of a guided session. The children also have time to work on their spelling using Nessy, practise their mental maths, read independently and complete a grammar activity.

Each Monday the children will be given an English and maths homework task. This will be related to something that they have learnt in class that day or in the previous weeks.  Children will be expected to bring their homework in the following Tuesday. Occasionally, children will take home mental maths practice on a Friday, as these are really good skills to practice in preparation for Year 6.

Reading: Please continue to encourage your child to read aloud to you at home and you to read to them. We have given each child a reading record. Children should keep track of the books they are reading and how often. We would like them to be reading at 3 times a week at home and log in their journal. For ideas and inspiration for books to read please click here. For more recent new releases and titles visit love reading 4 kids where you can download extracts of books.

Spellings: We test spellings every Friday. Please make sure children know the meaning of all the words and how to use them in a sentence. Dictating sentences using the week’s spellings and incorporating others from previous lists can be a useful way of keeping certain letter patterns or particularly tricky words uppermost in their minds. For ideas on how to make learning spellings fun, click here.

Bloodhound Engineering day (19 images)

On Wednesday, Year 5 was lucky enough to have the chance to make their own balloon powered cars! 5 Engineers that are working on the Bloodhound project, where they are trying to make a supersonic car, came in to talk to Year 5 about how they are planning to break the world land speed record. ( This is quicker than the speed of sound!!)
