Year Three Curriculum
English in Year Three:
Term 1- We are learning how to write a description of familiar settings focusing on prepositions and adjectives. We will then look at the use of dialogue.

Term 2- We will be learning how to write a Myth based on the Greek Myth Perseus and Medusa. Towards the end of term we shall also be learning how to use and write dictionaries and instructions.

Term 3- This term the children will be writing non-chronological reports and we will be using penguins and Antarctica as a focus for this topic. We will finish the term with some poetry.

Term 4- We are writing an quest story based on Robert Swindell's Ice Palace.
We will focus on Poetry and devices such as alliteration, rhythm and rhyme (inc. rhyming couplets), as well as expression and tone.
Children will be asked to learn a poem to perform in front of class without a script.
We will continue to look at and write traditional tales- based on Burri and the Marrow.

We will be looking at and writing a voyage and return story, looking at the decisions made by characters on their journey. This will culminate in the children planning and writing their own story based on ‘Leon and the Place Between’ by Angela McAllister.
Children will also develop their dictionary skills by practising organising information alphabetically, using a dictionary to check spelling and looking up word definitions.

We have been learning about 2D and 3D Shapes.
We are also learning to use 'Cuisinaire®' rods
This term we have been continuing to learn and revise quick mental addition and subtraction facts, working towards writing formal methods for addition.
This term we will be learning about multiplication and division and learn to use informal formal written methods to help us solve problems.
We will focus on multiplying 10 and 100, understanding how to tackle word problems.
We will finish the term by interpreting data, including pictograms and bar charts.
Times tables tests will continue to be on a Friday. We are so impressed with the children’s tables and please continue to help your child practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables (including the related division facts and fraction!) for their Ultimate Bronze Certificate.
We will be focusing on multiplication and division, including formal written methods and learning to apply our knowledge. After this, we will look at fractions of both shapes and numbers. We will also look at rotation and turns as well as orientation.
After that we will be finding fractions of shapes and numbers.
This term the children will be continuing to learn about fractions, including equivalence (2 quarters = one half), comparing fractions (1 third > 1 quarter) and fractions of numbers (1 quarter of 16 = 4).
The children will also be exploring symmetry, revising right angles and solving real life problems. Later in the term, we will be learning how to interpret different types of data. The children will continue to be tested on their multiplication tables and other mental maths which includes addition and subtraction.
This term the children will be extending their understanding of mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We will look at time and capacity before reviewing the four major operations. The children will also look at describing directions.
Times tables tests will continue to be on a Friday. Please continue to help your child practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables (including the related division and fraction facts!) for their Ultimate Bronze Certificate, moving on to 3, 4 and 8 times tables for their Silver. It is our aim for all children to know these tables by the end of Year 3!
